About Douglas & Son

In 1943, Henry Leathers and Clark Douglas established a Pratt & Lambert paint store at 430 South Burdick Street in downtown Kalamazoo. After World War II ended, Henry moved away and Clark and his teenage son, Jerry, continued the business as Douglas & Son. In 1957, Clark and his wife Doris added a storefront to their family home at 231 West Cedar Street and moved the business to that location, where it remains to this day. Soon after the business moved, Clark passed away, leaving the business for Jerry and his mother to run.

In 1965, Jerry hired Rodger Storteboom, a young man who lived across the street from him and mowed his lawn, to do janitorial, stocking and delivery work in the store. Rodger worked there throughout his college years at Western Michigan University. In 1969, with a degree in Marketing, he began working full-time for Douglas & Son until he left to serve in Vietnam. Rodger returned from the war, injured and weak, but Jerry Douglas gave him back his job. After regaining his strength and managing the store for several years, Rodger purchased the business on his 40th birthday in 1986.

Douglas & Son has evolved into your leading source for paint and decorating products in Southwest Michigan. We provide products and services for homeowners, painters, designers, contractors, hospitals, school systems, commercial and manufacturing businesses. We are proud members of Homebuilders Association of Southwest Michigan and the Kalamazoo County Chamber of Commerce, and we are the only paint and wallpaper store to be a member of Buy Local Greater Kalamazoo. Douglas & Son is also a member of Allpro Corporation, the largest buying group for independent paint stores in the country. This gives us access to the latest trends in the paint and decorating business and allows us to offer competitive pricing on our products.

Although Douglas and Son was founded as a Pratt & Lambert store, over time we have added Benjamin Moore, Graham and Pittsburgh paint lines to our inventory. With two large warehouses, we offer more product choices than anyone in the area. We also have a design center with one of the largest wallpaper book libraries in the Midwest, plus custom window treatments, state-of-the-art color centers featuring colors from each of our four paint lines, and an experienced, professionally trained staff who take color matching to a level beyond the spectrophotometers.

At Douglas & Son, we use our unsurpassed knowledge in the paint and decorating field to offer our customers the best products and services (including professional advice), precise paint and stain matching and color consultations.

While Douglas & Son has progressed over the years and invested in the latest technology, we still believe in offering our customers old-fashioned customer service. Our store was founded on the principle that quality paint is a wise investment, and we still operate on that principle today. Getting the right paint for your job and the correct application advice is one of your best and most cost-effective values in home improvement. The professional staff in our Design Center will guide you in selecting the best colors and wallpaper patterns to enhance the personality of your home or business. We take the time to talk with you and direct you to the best choices for your job.
