In 1943, Henry Leathers and Clark Douglas established a Pratt & Lambert paint store at 430 South Burdick Street in downtown Kalamazoo. After World War II ended, Henry moved away and Clark and his teenage son, Jerry, continued the business as Douglas & Son. In 1957, Clark and his wife Doris added a storefront to their family home at 231 West Cedar Street and moved the business to that location, where it remains to this day. Soon after the business moved, Clark passed away, leaving the business for Jerry and his mother to run. In 1965, Jerry hired Rodger Storteboom to do janitorial, stocking and delivery work in the store. After managing the store for several years, Rodger purchased the business in 1986. Today, he is semi-retired and has turned most of his day-to-day responsibilities over to his step-son, Jason Morris, who has worked for Douglas & Son since 1995.

Douglas and Son was founded as a Pratt & Lambert store, but over time, we have added the paint lines of Benjamin Moore (now a Benjamin Moore Store of the Future), California, and Pittsburgh (now a PPG Premier Authorized Dealer). With two large warehouses, we offer more product choices than anyone in the area. We also have a Design Center with one of the largest wallpaper book libraries in the Midwest, Custom Window Treatments, and state-of-the-art Color Centers featuring colors from each of our 4 paint lines. Most important, we have an experienced, professionally trained staff that takes color matching to a new level.
